How Much Do Nurses Really Earn in Germany?

Moving to Germany as a registered nurse offers exceptional career stability, but understanding the German salary system (TVöD-P) and tax classes can be incredibly confusing for international professionals. Whether you are an Indian nurse planning your migration or an international professional already in the Anerkennung (recognition) process, knowing exactly what your take-home pay will be is crucial.

What is the TVöD-P?

Public and private hospitals in Germany adhere to collective wage agreements like TVöD-P, TV-L, or AVR. Once your nursing degree is fully recognized in Germany, you will typically start at a level that guarantees a base gross salary between €3,000 and €4,000+ per month, depending on the state, experience, and shift bonuses.

Gross vs. Net Salary (Brutto vs. Netto)

In Germany, the salary stated in your employment contract is always the Gross Salary (Brutto). Before this money hits your bank account, mandatory deductions are taken out for:

  • Income Tax (Lohnsteuer)
  • Health Insurance (Krankenversicherung)
  • Pension Insurance (Rentenversicherung)
  • Unemployment Insurance (Arbeitslosenversicherung)
  • Nursing Care Insurance (Pflegeversicherung)

The amount left over is your Net Salary (Netto)—this is your actual take-home pay that you can use for rent, groceries, and savings.

How Tax Classes (Steuerklasse) Affect Your Pay

Your net salary heavily depends on your marital status, which dictates your German Tax Class:

Class 1 (Single)

If you are unmarried, you fall into Tax Class 1. Expect about 35% to 40% of your gross salary to be deducted for taxes and social security.

Class 3 (Married, Single Earner)

If you are married and your spouse does not work (or earns significantly less), you get major tax breaks. You will keep roughly 68% to 70% of your gross pay.

Do Different German States Pay Differently?

Yes. While the TVöD-P is a federal agreement, hospitals in southern states like Bavaria (Munich) and Baden-Württemberg (Stuttgart) often pay slightly higher baseline salaries or offer specific regional bonuses (München-Zulage) to compensate for the higher cost of living. Eastern states like Saxony (Leipzig) may have slightly lower starting salaries, but the rent is drastically cheaper, often resulting in higher overall savings.

Disclaimer: This calculator provides highly accurate estimates based on standard 2026 tax brackets (excluding church tax). Individual circumstances, night shift bonuses, and weekend allowances will increase your final take-home pay.
